Dear HWW Students, Families, and Community members,

We want to share with you the message reviewed with all Henry Wise Wood students today.

We recognize that there are a number of traumatic events taking place worldwide that are directly impacting our Warrior families.

As a school and public education system, we are committed to the right for all students and staff to have a welcoming, caring, respectful and safe learning and work environment.

As a staff, we are committed to creating an environment that is welcoming to all students and we are asking you to do the same.

This includes zero tolerance for bullying, including our online presence. Remember our digital citizenship policies.

This includes hate speech of any kind.

We will continue to be kind to one another and to care for one another.

This is an expectation of all of our Warrior students. As always, our Student Code of Conduct is in effect.

We also want to remind our students of the supports and resources available; this is particularly timely as this week holds World Mental Health Day. If students have a concern, they are asked to talk with a supportive adult and come down to the main office.

We are looking forward to several upcoming events.

On Tuesday, October 17th at lunch, students have the opportunity to “Walk A Mile in Her Shoes". The Calgary YW recently opened a brand new facility to accommodate women, their families and pets who must leave an urgent domestic situation to find safety. This event offers the opportunity to “walk a mile" in someone else's shoes to raise awareness of this important Calgary service.

Students who would like to participate will bring home information letters and Acknowledgement of Risk forms for parents/guardians to review and sign.

Also on Tuesday is our photo re-take day and photos for students who have not yet had their photo taken by Lifetouch. These will be held in the Cafeteria.

Students will be called down by last name throughout the day.

Also upcoming next Wednesday morning, October 18th, is our Veterans' Tea wherein students will sit with, and learn from, our visiting Veterans as they share their stories. We will have several displays in which students can take part, and a visual tribute to our own 2 fallen soldier HWW alumni. Media will be in attendance, your students will have media release forms for your review and signature if your student's teacher has signed up for the class to take part.

School Conferences are coming up Thursday, October 19 and Friday, October 20. Please sign up through your PowerSchool account. Please note that we are offering one evening in person and one morning of virtual interviews to provide for both options for our families.

For those Grade 10 families with a student in ELA 10, we invite you to join us for a session on the proficiency scale within outcomes-based assessment. A separate communication will be shared to you with more information.

Together with you, our Warrior families, we affirm our commitment to a welcoming, safe, caring and respectful learning environment for all students and staff. As always, our door is open if you would like to reach out to talk with an administrator on any matters of concern.

Thank you for your partnership with us,

Aileen Smyth
