Henry Wise Wood Students and Veterans Connect Through Stories and Life Experiences

A group of about 25 veterans visited Henry Wise Wood High School, giving students the opportunity to hear about their experiences, ask questions and express their gratitude to each veteran.

Students gathered in the school’s courtyard on Oct. 18 to share tea and stories with local veterans during the school’s 12th Annual Veterans’ Tea. Teacher Reka Teleky came up with the idea of creating more opportunities for students to interact with the veterans who visit their school around Remembrance Day.

“My grandfather was a veteran, and I could not talk to him about his experiences. Through this event, I almost feel like I am hearing his voice,” says Sophia, a Grade 12 student.

Principal Aileen Smyth said this event connects closely to the Social Studies Program of Studies. Students can experience a first-hand account of the history they are studying in class. Discussions are held in social studies classes before the event, and students thoughtfully prepare their questions for veterans and engage in post-event reflections on their learning.

Students in Foods classes made tea and goodies for the event, and art students made decorations and poppies. The event also featured performances from the school band and a pop-up gallery with stories and remembrances of war experiences called the War in Pieces. Quilts of Valour, handmade quilt art pieces, were on display and gifted to the veterans in attendance as a thank-you for their service. Sargent Darrel Sundholm remarked that interacting with students is as enjoyable for him as it can be for the students. He is amazed by their intelligence and says if we can encourage them to be great, they will do great things in this world.

Embodying ‘Lest We Forget,’ the event fostered a community connection between the veterans and the students, allowing important stories to be shared and passed from generation to generation.
