Veterans’ Tea Returns to HWW on Wed. October 14:  led by Ms. Teleky

One of Henry Wise Wood’s most cherished traditions is returning this fall. For nearly 15 years, the Veterans’ Tea has provided students with a unique opportunity to connect personally with veterans and learn firsthand about their experiences, service, and sacrifices.

This year, we are expecting more than 40 veterans representing a wide range of military backgrounds, along with community organizations and volunteers. Students will have the opportunity to move through the Courtyard, visit exhibits, engage in conversations with veterans, explore military vehicles, interact with the Military Museums’ Mural of Honour, learn about Quilts of Valour, support the Veterans Association Food Bank, and write postcards of gratitude to veterans living in care homes.

The event was created to give students and veterans meaningful opportunities to share stories beyond what is possible during a traditional Remembrance Day assembly. It also honours the memory of veterans who have impacted our school community, as well as HWW alumni Michael Starker and Chad Horn.

The Veterans’ Tea is truly a school-wide event involving students and staff from Band, Art, Foods, Leadership, Photography, Technical Theatre, ACCESS, PLP, Cadets, Interact, and many other programs. It is a powerful reminder of the importance of remembrance, gratitude, service, and community.

Henry Wise Wood Back to School - The Artists Perspective

Our period 4 Art 20 Students at Henry Wise Wood High School were invited to exhibit work at the Southwood Library for the month of October.  Participating artists were asked to capture scenes of school life in the first few days back from the summer break.  Using black and white photography, the artists took candid shots from around common areas of the school.  These references were re-produced as enlarged charcoal pastel compositions.  Students were encouraged to use tortillons and blending stumps to achieve a wide breadth of value.  Essentially, students were “painting with dust” to produce the resolved work.

The universal feelings of back-to-school transitions are relatable to most.  The mix of emotions hasn’t changed all that much, with many students welcoming a bit of routine and re-connection with their peer group, while others could’ve really used just a few more days of summer.  Anxiety, excitement, cautious optimism, and some relief in seeing people they’ve missed for several weeks makes for an atmosphere of dynamic energy in the building that first week back.  Our students captured that energy and are pleased to share their “Welcome Back” impressions in this display.

The exhibition runs from Tuesday, Oct. 5th, 2026 to Halloween.
