Principal's Message
Dear HWW Students, Families and Community members,
This Sunday, June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples’ Day and the Summer Solstice with many community opportunities to gather, honour, and celebrate Indigenous Peoples.
The Gathering at Moh'kinsstis: A one-day community gathering grounded in culture, connection, and ceremony to celebrate National Indigenous Peoples’ Day on Sunday, June 21 from 11 a.m. - 9:30 p.m. at ContainR Art Park & The Alexandra Centre (922 & 925 9 Avenue SE in Inglewood).
Heritage Park Celebration: A full day of community-led programming on Saturday, June 20, rooted in tradition. The centerpiece of the day is a vibrant Pow Wow, a powerful gathering that brings together dancers, drummers, and community in celebration of culture, identity and connection.
Monday, June 2 marked eleven years since the release of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s 94 Calls to Action, and five years since all schools have made an annual TRC Commitment to Action.
This year, our school’s Truth and Reconciliation commitment is “learning about and through Indigenous knowledges focused on building student capacity for intercultural understanding, empathy, and mutual respect”. At Henry Wise Wood High School, we will continue to be, mindful in culturally responsive task design and creating space for our self-identifying Indigenous learners and all learners. As a staff, we have been engaging in learning from Indigenous Elders, and exploring the crucial, forgotten or overlooked stories about this place and space.
In celebration of the strengths of our self- identifying Indigenous students, we honour the work of our Learning Lodge, our partnership with Tsuut’ina Education, our Commun-i-tea gatherings and our family relationships. Our final Commun-i-tea of the year is on June 25 from 4-6pm, for our incoming Grade 9 families.
The exam session is going well. Hand to heart to our wonderful School Council for the Fuel Your Brain snacks. What a gift to student wellbeing to see the encouragement of your smiling faces! Please note that credit rescue opportunities for students continue until Friday.

Aileen
